Thursday, May 27, 2021 “As you navigate through the rest of your life, be open to collaboration. Other people and other people's ideas are often better than your own," Amy Poehler told Harvard's class of 2011. Dear Ocean Shore Families, I'm keeping it short and sweet. I'm thinking a lot about graduations right now, probably because Clara graduated from Terra Nova yesterday, and probably because I'm thinking ahead to saying goodbye to our 8th graders two weeks from today. Graduation speeches are often boring and long. How many different ways can you tell young people to work hard, follow their passions, pursue lifelong education, and not be afraid to fail? Also, graduates only really care about what their peers have to say, not what the boring "old" (anyone over 30) principal tells them regarding being the future or having the courage to make a difference in the world. Amy Poehler's quote resonates with me because we live in a time of contention; national politics is polarized and anonymity on social media allows people to "say" things that they would never attach their names to or say in person. We have to be willing to listen to others--really listen--and be willing to change our minds or to compromise in order to move forward. THAT is an important lesson for our graduates and ourselves. Take care, and enjoy the three-day weekend! (There is no school this Monday, May 31st. ) Jeanne Shout out to: all the men and women who have given their lives in the service of our country, and to all of those that are currently serving. Memorial Day is for them. School Business Hybrid Instructional Calendar - * TOMORROW* May 28th is an A day for 4-8th grade. Friday, May 21, 2021 Quote of the week: "So much time and so little to do. Wait a minute. Strike that. Reverse it." -Willie Wonka Dear Ocean Shore Families, This time of year is crazy enough without navigating the end (hopefully) of a pandemic. I'm beyond busy right now with Clara's graduation, out-of-town guests, interviewing for our open teaching positions, finishing the portfolio for my administrative credential program, planning for 8th grade graduation... I'm sure I'm forgetting something. I know I'm not alone in feeling overworked and a little frantic right now. Luckily, my smart phone reminds me to breathe. Speaking of crazy, next Friday, 5/28, is an A day for 4th-8th graders and a B day for 1st-3rd grade. That means we will have 1st, 3rd, 4th, 1/2 of 6th (A's) and 8th graders on campus that day. Kindergarten, second, fifth and seventh graders will be at home. Tuesday, June 1st will be a regular A day. Ugh! I can't wait until we are all back on campus every day. Luckily, it looks like that will be the case in August. Our breath is one of the few things that is (usually) under our control. So...take a deep breath and go with the flow. Be well and enjoy your weekend! Jeanne Shout out of the week: I'm giving one more plug for the Pacifica Education Foundation and for our Ocean Shore Families and staff that have already donated. If you check out PEF's website https://www.pacificaef.org/, you will see that Ocean Shore (12K) and Cabrillo (13K) are neck and neck in terms of total dollars raised. As of 10:00 am today, Ocean Shore is leading (just barely) all of the schools in the number of memberships (33) and the number of donors (55). We can do even better. If you have the means to purchase a $250 membership, that will get PEF closer to its goal of $85,000. However, if $20 is what your budget will allow, please still donate, and we will be grateful for your support. Every person and every dollar counts. Friday, May 14, 2021 Quote of the week: “What mental health needs is more sunlight, more candor, and more unashamed conversation.” - Glenn Close, actress and mental health advocate Dear Ocean Shore Families, May is mental health awareness month and it seems more important than ever to focus on caring for ourselves, our students, our children, our families, our friends. This pandemic has impacted all of us. Like many people, I feel passionate about issues that relate to my interests or needs. I helped found the Pacifica Education Foundation because equity in education is important to me. I served on campaigns to pass our parcel taxes for the same reason, and volunteered at the San Francisco SPCA because I care deeply about animal welfare. I feel just as passionate about raising awareness about mental health. It's much easier to talk about mental illness now than it was in the 1970's and 80's when I was growing up. I didn't know why I seemed to feel things more intensely than other people, or why my sisters spent so much time in their rooms with the doors closed. Out of the five Boland siblings, four of us were diagnosed with clinical depression as adults. In my case, clinical depression and general anxiety disorder, and I didn't seek help until I was 41 and convinced that my 6-year-old son and my 3-year-old daughter would be better off without me. Of course, this was not the case, but it felt real to me. When you are in the grips of depression, you don't think rationally. Luckily, I was able to get the help I needed. I found a great therapist, started taking medication, and began learning how to manage depression and anxiety. I share this because mental illness affects 20% of the adult population in a "normal" year (https://www.nami.org/mhstats) and I'm sure the numbers for 2020-21 are much higher. I share this because we need to talk about mental health with each other and with our children in order to destigmatize it. I share this because it's never too early or too late to get help. Finally, I share this in the hope that my openness might encourage others to speak up, find help, or support others that are struggling. Take care and be well! Jeanne Vaccinations available for 12-15 year-olds! Please go to SMC Health's website for more information or call your pediatrician. Get those kids vaccinated asap! https://www.smchealth.org/vaccine-clinic-calendar. Shout out of the week: Our amazing PTO and our 7th/8th grade families provided a wonderful lunch for us last week and Liza Scatena-Martinez, one of the managers at Colombo's, and mom to Maxton, spent hours making us sandwiches that Columbo's donated to our staff. Thank you for taking care of us! And another shout out to the Pacifica Education Foundation which raises much-needed funds to support the elementary music, middle school band, SPARC Poetry, and other programs that benefit our students and staff. Please consider donating to the Pacifica Education Foundation during Donation Days next week, May 19th-21st. We cannot run these programs without your support, and our goal is to sign up 100 new families as PEF members. As the founding president of PEF, I know how crucial it is that we support an education foundation that benefits all of Pacifica's children. Please see the attached flier for more information. Friday, May 7, 2021 Quote of the week: "If I ever write a memoir, the title will be: You're a Better Mother than I am." -Jeanne Bellinger Dear Ocean Shore Families, Ah, Mother's Day. The day moms get breakfast in bed and then have to clean up the entire kitchen when they get up. This year has been hard on everyone, but I think it's been especially hard on mothers. Nearly 3 million women have dropped out of the American workforce since last March, many of them mothers struggling to care for children. Mothers trying to work from home have been expected to juggle their job responsibilities, plus coordinate their children(s) Zoom schedules and serve as homeschool teachers in the process. Many women are also trying to care for older relatives, and before the vaccine was readily available, had to deal with the stress of worrying about those older adults getting sick, not to mention the stress of possible loss of income, and the stress of dealing with their children's mental health and wellbeing. While I am thrilled to have kids back at school, I also know that the hybrid schedule is even more challenging for parents, adding in the logistics of pick up and drop off, staggered start times and figuring out when to Zoom from home on asynchronous days. Then throw in the stress of social media. I know I shouldn't compare myself to other moms, yet there's that Facebook post from my friend who's having her kids build garden beds, create art projects from recycled materials and sell organic baked goods on Instagram. Oh, look, my sister's daughter is getting an elite college scholarship while my daughter has dropped two classes and has developed a Minecraft addiction. It has been a lot, to say the least. I guess the silver lining is that we have all learned to adapt. We might drop the ball now and again, but our kids are getting through this and so are we. There IS a light at the end of the COVID tunnel. It's Friday, so I'd like to raise a glass and toast all of the mothers in our community. Hang in there. We are all doing the best we can, and the kids are alright. Cheers! Jeanne School Business Link to the 2021-22 Return to OSS form: Return to OSS 2021-22 Please fill this out by 5/10/21 so that we can plan staffing for next year. Our office staff will start calling families next week that have not filled out the form. Link to the Daily Health Screening Form: OSS Daily Health Screening CAASPP testing: 3rd through 8th graders will be tested. The testing schedules will vary depending on the grade level, and the teachers are in the process of setting up their schedules. When they do, teachers or ombuds will provide that schedule to parents. Ocean Shore's testing window is between May 27th and June 10th. Testing will occur most likely for an hour in the morning, and then the rest of the day will be spent on other activities. The federal government has mandated that we give these tests. Therefore, California public schools do not have a choice in the matter. Staffing for the 2021-22 school year: Marguerite and Sandy will not be teaching 4th/5th grade next year. The district will be posting that position next week, as well as our open 2nd and 3rd grade positions. We are not taking any parent requests for specific homeroom teachers at all for the 2021-22 school year. 8th grade graduation will be at Terra Nova High School on Thursday, June 10th @ 2:00 pm. Ticket information and instructions will be shared with our 8th grade parents as we receive it. All PSD 8th grade graduation ceremonies will take place on the Terra Nova football field. Families will sit in the bleachers. Student Council Book Drive/Sale: We'll be accepting new and gently used books for our annual student council book drive and sale. Students can drop off books in their classrooms next week (5/10-5/13) and the sale will be the following week (5/17-5/21) from 12:40-1:10 in the yard, weather permitting.
