Friday, March 19, 2021 Quote of the week: "If everyone is moving forward together, then success will take care of itself."--Henry Ford, founder of Ford Motor Company Dear Ocean Shore Families, I'm thrilled to officially announce that all continuum students will be returning to school the week of April 19th! I know the hybrid model is not ideal, not by a long shot. I've heard from parents who are excited, parents who are apprehensive, parents who want to switch from full year distance learning to hybrid, and parents who signed up for hybrid but now don't want to return to school. I want to reassure everyone--parents, staff and students--that we DO have a plan. Do I have all the answers about what this will look like? No, I do not. However, the staff and I are working on it, and parents WILL have information as it is finalized. There will be an official "Back to School Night 2.0" on Thursday, April 15th from 6:00-7:15 via Zoom. Will I be sending out information sooner than 4/15? Yes, I will. As of this moment, here is what I can tell you for sure. Cohort (Group) A: Monday, Tuesday: Kindergarten, 2nd, 4th, 1/2 of 6th **, 8th Wednesday: At-home, asynchronous learning for all students Cohort (Group) B: Thursday, Friday: 1st, 3rd, 5th, 1/2 of 6th **, 7th Ocean Shore Start Dates (this is the same as the PSD plan, but I've written it differently) First day for K, 2nd. April 19 - an A day First day for 1st, 3rd, 5th, 1/2 of 6th, 7th. April 22 - a B day First day for 4th, 1/2 of 6th, 8th ( K and 2 will also attend) April 26- an A day ** The cohorts (groups) for sixth grade will be determined by 3/26. Please reach out to Katy Stearns @ [email protected] if you have a preference in being part of the A (Monday, Tuesday) or B group (Thursday, Friday) and she will try to accommodate you if possible. She will NOT necessarily be able to accommodate everyone's requests. Special Education Students might have different schedules. Please stay tuned for more details. Arrival and Dismissal Times Kindergarten: 9:00 am-12:00 pm 1-3: 8:50 am -1:00 pm 4-5: 8:40 am -1:00 pm 6-8 8:30am -12:50 pm We are still working on drop off and pick up procedures and locations. Students' temperatures will be taken before they enter campus, and families will be expected to fill out a Google form each morning, as the staff do now, that asks health screening questions. More to follow. Take a deep breath and hang in there. Cheers! Jeanne Shout out of the week: The Ocean Shore Community. We are all a team--families, students, and staff. Friday, March 12, 2021 Quote of the week: "The show must go on!" --Patty McNally (Well, actually it can be traced back to the circus industry in the 1800's, but still...) Dear Ocean Shore Families, I think about Patty McNally every day. She was a mentor to me, and the fact that she supported hiring me as Ocean Shore's principal sustains me on the days that I feel like I'm not up to this challenging job, in this crazy, difficult year. Next week we will celebrate her life by exploring the theme of teamwork. All teachers throughout the district are encouraged to participate in lessons surrounding what it means to be a good team member. The week will end with a district-wide team spirit day on Friday, March 19th. It's only fitting that next week is also multicultural week at Ocean Shore. There will be activities during the school day for students, and we have our Multicultural Night on Patty's birthday, 3/17 @ 6:15 pm. There are supply bags for diversity week for all OSS students (including FYDL) that are available for pick up today and into next week. Please see the blurb below and the attached flier for more information. Let's all channel our inner Patty and focus on ways we can be good teammates to our family, friends, and fellow community members! Take care, Jeanne Shout out of the week: This week's shout-out goes to Sophie Korn who decided today to do an impromptu food/supply drive in Patty's honor. Ocean Shore will be collecting food and supplies that the Pacifica Resource Center needs right now. Please drop off any of the following items to Ocean Shore between Mon. 3/15 & Fri. 3/19: hearty canned soups/chilli, spam or other canned meats/proteins, cup of noodles/instant noodles, diapers in size: 2, 5 or 6. Please make sure that the food items are not expired and the diapers are unopened. Containers will be near the front door. Thank you! Spring Forward: Don't forget that we set the clock back this Sunday @ 2:00 am. Monday morning will feel extra early, but I know I will enjoy the extra hour of sunshine in the evening. Plus, it means that summer is coming! School Business: Return to School Update: I will have one next week. Conference week is 3/15/21-32/19/21. These conferences are for students that are struggling or per parent request. All days will be minimum days. However, some afternoon enrichment activities, such as 3-5 music, will still be offered. Multicultural Night: Join the Ocean Shore Community as we celebrate OSS’s environment of inclusion. In addition to age-appropriate virtual class activities, we will be welcoming a wide range of guest presenters on Tuesday and Thursday. We will also celebrate together as a community with Multicultural Night on Wednesday, March 17 at 6:15. Special Guests include: Sarah & Ian Hoffman, authors of Jacob’s New Dress and Jacob’s Room to Choose and the forthcoming Jacob’s School Play: Starring He, She, and They! Friday, March 5, 2021 Quote of the week: " A strong woman stands up for herself. A stronger woman stands up for everybody else." --anonymous Dear Ocean Shore Families, Happy Women's History Month! As a woman currently living through a time of historical significance, I think I can say that living through history is definitely overrated. If I hear the word resilience once more, I'm going to bang my head against the wall. However, the truth is that we are all stronger than we think we are, and that especially goes for women. Women are still often portrayed in the media as weak, too emotional, unable to fend for themselves or to solve complicated problems. That's never been historically accurate, of course, and it's certainly not true in 2021. When I look at the women in education, I see ingenuity, creativity, loving kindness, and endurance. I look around me at the women and girls in this community and I see strength. We sometimes break down, but we get right back up and keep going. I am so proud of all of us. This past year has been a marathon, not a sprint, but we are in the homestretch. Take care, Jeanne Shout out of the week: Natalie Abinante and Meghann Elsbernd (Cabrillo teacher and LSEA president) are coordinating Patty Week which will be the week of 3/15/21. The theme for the week is teamwork, and all teachers throughout the district are encouraged to participate in lessons exploring what it means to be a good team member. We will have a district-wide team spirit day on Friday, March 19th. Please see the flier below. In addition, the PSD school board will also be honoring Patty at the next meeting, Wednesday, 3/10 at 7:00 pm. PSD School Board Meeting (Passcode: 944902,.
