Reflections from my Office: Next week, many classes begin statewide testing. In California, 3rd – 8th graders have the opportunity to participate in California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress, or CAASPP. The assessments that comprise the 2018-19CAASPP administration include computer-based tests in English-Language Arts and Mathematics in grades 3-8. Additionally, the California Science Test (CAST) will b given to students in grades 5 and 8. CLICK HERE for a guide for parents to understand the CAASSP assessments. Here a few reminders suggested for parents:
This time of year as we embark on testing, brings to light a topic I have mentioned before related to fostering a growth mindset. I spent the majority of my spring break working on my dissertation. Part of my current work and research has shed some insightful guidance on how we can best support our kids in how they self-identify as math students. One such article by Jo Boaler stood out, and I wanted to share these ideas with you as parents. I would love your thoughts on it! In my classroom, it was undeniable to me how essential confidence was for students to do well on academic and achievement tasks. As our older students are taking their statewide tests on math this week, I am reminding of how important poise and confidence are for students as they approach robust academic tasks – especially such things as testing like the CAASPP. This best occurs when parents and staff who encourage a positive mindset with their students guide kids. Here are some tips from Jo Boaler: Given the performance and test-driven culture of many schools, with over-packed curriculum and stressed out students, what can parents do to transform math for their children? Here are some steps to take: Advice for Parents from Stanford Professor Jo Boaler 1. Encourage children to play math puzzles and games. Award winning mathematician, Sarah Flannery reported that her math achievement and enthusiasm came not from school but from the puzzles she was given to solve at home. Puzzles and games – anything with a dice really – will help kids enjoy math, and develop number sense, which is critically important. 2. Always be encouraging and never tell kids they are wrong when they are working on math problems. Instead find the logic in their thinking – there is always some logic to what they say. For example if your child multiplies 3 by 4 and gets 7, say – Oh I see what you are thinking, you are using what you know about addition to add 3 and 4, when we multiply we have 4 groups of 3... 3. Never associate math with speed. It is not important to work quickly, and we now know that forcing kids to work quickly on math is the best way to start math anxiety for children, especially girls. (In most cases) don’t use flashcards or other speed drills. Instead use visual activities such as https://bhi61nm2cr3mkdgk1dtaov18-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/FluencyWithoutFear-2015.pdf 4. Never share with your children the idea that you were bad at math at school or you dislike it – especially if you are a mother. Researchers found that as soon as mothers shared that idea with their daughters, their daughter’s achievement went down. 5. Encourage number sense. What separates high and low achievers is number sense – having an idea of the size of numbers and being able to separate and combine numbers flexibly. For example, when working out 29 + 56, if you take one from the 56 and make it 30 + 55, it is much easier to work out. The flexibility to work with numbers in this way is what is called number sense and it is very important. 6. Perhaps most important of all – encourage a “growth mindset” let students know that they have unlimited math potential and that being good at math is all about working hard. When children have a growth mindset, they do well with challenges and do better in school overall. When children have a fixed mindset and they encounter difficult work, they often conclude that they are not “a math person”. One way in which parents encourage a fixed mindset is by telling their children they are “smart” when they do something well. That seems like a nice thing to do, but it sets children up for difficulties later, as when kids fail at something they will inevitably conclude that they aren’t smart after all. Instead use growth praise such as “it is great that you have learned that”, “I really like your thinking about that”. When they tell you something is hard for them, or they have made a mistake, tell them: “That’s wonderful, your brain is growing!” Encourage number sense. For more resources see https://www.youcubed.org I know all of our kids will do great as they put forth their best effort and shine in showing how much they do know instead of feeling that they lack ability. Our teachers are motivating our kids as we speak, and encouraging them to write about their feelings related to testing. I encourage you to do the same! Staff Makin’ Waves: This week we say goodbye to a beloved staff member, Kayoko. As a dedicated paraprofessional working with Matt’s class and our special needs students, she has served Ocean Shore for 18 years. As a parent and staff member, we are so grateful for her dedication and commitment to helping the students of Ocean Shore thrive. We wish her well in the next chapter as her husband and her relocate to Japan. We will miss you, Kayoko! Scenes from the Week! It was a busy week at OSS! From several Earth Day assemblies, to dancing to music at recess, to finding notes from your parents in your lunch box, Ocean Shore kids had lots to smile about as they returned from spring break! I wish you an enjoyable week off from school spending time with family or friends. This morning we were dancing at recess in anticipation of spring break! I asked some students what they are planning to do for the break. Here were some of their responses: “We are going back to Legoland!” “Sleeping.” “I am going bowling with my parents!” “We are moving to a new house!” "My cousins live in Sacramento so I am going to see them." “We are going to Seattle!" “My sister has to look at colleges. So I have to go with.” "I just want to play with my dog." (This was the response from the principal... :) Reflections from my Office: This week was full of events such as the POD day on Wednesday. On Wednesday, I was joined by 6th grader Roan Taylor-Dion to help “run” the school. He was the student who won the “Student Principal of the Day” from the PTO auction fundraiser. He was a very effective leader and made “tough decisions” such as how to make sure every grade level earned equal amounts of the “bonus” 5 minute recess time he granted the students. He assumed his leadership role in stride, and even had time to write encouragement notes to each teacher. Positive feedback is important to share when leading a team! Yet again, this experience was another reminder of how Ocean Shore students shine in leadership roles. When given the opportunity, they lead with grace, poise, integrity, fair-mindedness and respect. I feel that this is something current world leaders could learn from our kids! Here is a picture of Roan as he led the school on Wednesday! Staff Makin’ Waves:
Last week, our staff gathered at my house for a “housewarming gathering” as I recently moved to Half Moon Bay. It was such a special event to have all of our staff on my backyard. I was so humbled by the lovely potted plant they brought me. Virginia, gifted with a green thumb, put together this beautiful pot on behalf of the staff. It now sits on my patio as a reminder of our special team of educators at Ocean Shore. This was a lovely gesture from them, and I feel very fortunate to serve our community alongside of them! Morning recess on Fridays at Ocean Shore is pretty fun! Our middle school sound crew play music for the school, and a large dance party takes place! It is pretty great to watch our kids jump and bounce to the music. Here is a look from last Friday from a parent volunteer! Reflections from my Office:
I find myself smiling when I read articles on the latest and greatest trends in education. Educational experts are raving about the benefits of such things as “project-based learning”. There is not an easy explanation of what exactly is project-based learning. However, I found a great article on the “elevator speech” to explain project-based learning on Edutopia. It is posted HERE if you are interested. Essentially, project-based learning are experiences designed for students to demonstrate their learning through the entire unit or project – not just at the end. They seek to solve a real-world problem and develop a solution using evidence to support their claim. They present their solution in multiple formats and multimedia. I smile when I read about the “newness” of this idea, which I agree with the research that it is incredibly impactful for students to “own” their ideas and the learning process. While this idea is new to others, this is just the ways things have always been at Ocean Shore. Our school started with project-based learning in mind, and is why we celebrate such traditions like Oceans Week. We explore topics deeply and place the student in the center of the learning process. They drive their learning. They seek solutions to real-world problems with their class projects and then demonstrate how their solutions. One such example of project-based learning was Katy’s 6th grade social studies project. This is a tradition that has been going on for years at Ocean Shore, and last night the 6th graders demonstrated their learning by presenting in multimedia forms what they learned about early civilizations. They wrote plays and performed them for their parents the school today. It was truly an event as the students not only performed the play but they educated each other with posters, created board games and facilitated booths representing different civilizations such as the Incas. Katy has been doing this activity for years, long before the research was out and has seen the benefits from her students. When I was talking with the 6th graders today they shared their feedback about the experience. Here is what they said: “The project was really fun. We actually were doing like hands-on-learning because we made everything. I think I will remember this more instead of just reading a book.” “Kids should do this every year! It was hard because we did every part of writing, drawing and performing but I feel good knowing I did it.” “I am so nervous to do the play in front of the whole school! But I think I learned a lot – way more than if I had to just take a test.” “It was a lot of work but worth it. And we get to have a pajama party to celebrate finishing it!” “You learn better when you actually do something instead of just sitting and listening. We got to do a lot, and it was more interesting. We even did the sound and curtains!” Students Makin’ Waves: Congratulations to Darya Sanai! She is 1 of only 4 7th grade girls selected from Pacifica School District to attend Tech Trek this summer at Stanford University. This is a significant honor! Darya will spend one week this summer attending the STEM camp (science, technology, engineering and math) designed to develop interest, excitement, and self-confidence for young women. We look forward to cheering her on and hearing about the experiences when she returns as an 8th grader in the fall! From the Front Office: A word about HEAD LICE: When your child has head lice, it is no picnic. This is one of the most unpleasant - and difficult – experiences! It is also very, very common. Some estimate 20 million children a year host lice. Children often feel embarrassed about having lice, and wish to keep it private. While this is understandable, it is also imperative that you communicate with the school if your child has been impacted. This helps us follow up accordingly. Take a look HERE for more information related to head lice. Furthermore, there are great resources for parents to help our children understand why they get lice and hopefully ease their feelings about getting it. One such example is the book, Bugs in My Hair by David Shannon, which can be found in our school library. Join the Conversation about the Future of Housing in Pacifica on Saturday, April 13th 9:30 am – 12:00 pm! Click HERE for more information about an upcoming invitation to gather as a community to engage in this important conversation at the Pacifica Community Center. Drop them off at the office for our teacher Natalie to facilitate the activity. Thank you! FROM THE PEF CORNER: The Pacifica Education Foundation (PEF) is taking education to new heights.
