Dear Ocean Shore Families, Hello! It is hard to believe we are about to head into Winter Break. It seems like only yesterday it was the first week of school. Unbelievable how fast time goes – especially at a school! As we head into winter break, I wish you a wonderful, restful time to be with your family and friends. I know the kids (and staff!) are excited for some much-needed R & R! I’m looking forward to spending some time with my parents who will be visiting from Wisconsin. I am excited to explore my new city with my parents and play tourists! Reflections From My Office: On behalf of the staff at Ocean Shore School, Happy Holidays! I hope the winter break brings you rest and relaxation! We look forward to hearing the stories from the kids when they return! A few reminders as we head into break for the holidays: School resumes Monday, January 7! The office will be closed during the break. This morning was a special event! All of us gathered in the MPR for the "Wing Ding" to celebrate and share festive music with each other. Before the festivities began, we were able to make some special announcements. We announced to the kids the grand total they raised from the "Found Money" project which will support the recent fire victims. In grand total, the kids raised $1,168! This amount will be matched from a local company, PURE STORAGE! Isn't this awesome?! Next, we presented a portion of our proceeds from the Winter Bazaar which will go to the local community in the amount of $4,000! The kids erupted into applause to see their efforts go towards such a good cause. Thank you for your generous contribution to support the Winter Bazaar. What a beautiful gift our kids gave to our community! As I have mentioned before, I am so inspired by the benevolence that runs deep in our school. From our kids to parents to former alumni, the spirit of giving to those in need is thriving. This comes with grand lessons for our kids that go beyond any textbook or test. We are fortunate to have such a generous community! Our band played, students sang with Marilyn, the teachers serenaded the students, and our 8th graders did a dance (they choreographed) while the sang! It was so festive and great way to come together. I even was able to introduce my parents who were visiting for the day. A favorite moment occurred when a kindergartener looked up at me wide-eyed after introducing her to my mom and said in disbelief, "YOU STILL HAVE A MOM!?" I love these comments! On a personal note: Thank you, Ocean Shore families. This time of year brings me pause to consider my gratitude for my “favorite things.” Your support and encouragement has helped foster our indelible bond between school and home. I have enjoyed getting to know you and your children and look forward to building more memories together in January! Our community is strong. I am most grateful to be a part of it. Staff Makin’ Waves: We have some very dedicated music teachers at Ocean Shore. We are fortunate for the contributions of Ben Gower, Mark Unbehagen, and Marilyn Wells. Each teacher serves a unique niche in how they develop of love of music for our children. This time of year, they put in long hours and days to prepare for special music events that are priceless childhood memories. Ben has done a superior job facilitating our 6th-8th grade band, Mark leads a dynamic music program that gives children a robust foundation of music and music theory in our 3rd – 5th grade, and Marilyn helps our youngest students gain the poise and confidence to perform and sing their sweet little hearts out on stage! Combined, this provides the children of Ocean Shore with such a rich music experience. I am so grateful for each of their efforts! Here are are a few pictures from a class that recently took their love of music on the road. They sang for a local senior home and brought such joy to others! Parents Makin’ Waves: Several parents have been very helpful in working with our 7th and 8th grade develop exciting new educational opportunities for our enrichment classes. One such class was offered this semester and I had the opportunity to visit the class recently. An 8th grade father, Brandon Diaz, whose family is new to Ocean Shore, lends his expertise of song composition with the students. Students are composing, writing and performing their own songs! Here are a few pictures from the latest class: From the Front Office:

Weekly Flyers: Dear Ocean Shore Families, Hello! What a festive week at Ocean Shore! With only one more week remaining before we go on Winter Break, you can feel the energy and excitement across our classrooms, hallways, lunchroom, and the playground. I hope you are finding time to enjoy this special time of year. I love the events that are bringing us all together and have enjoyed seeing so many families at school! Reflections From My Office: I am reflecting this morning on the extraordinary event that occurred yesterday – our Winter Bazaar. It epitomized the heart of our school which is how the community comes together as powerful force for good in our world. It was exciting for me to be part of my first Ocean Shore Winter Bazaar and it was beyond what I could have imagined! The event kicked off with a sweet music serenade from our younger students. I was amazed at how our team of teachers, staff, parents and students transformed our MPR into a merry land of goods and crafts lovingly prepared by students (and teachers!) to sell in efforts to raise money for disadvantaged local Pacifica families. We will announce our final earnings next week! It was fun to see the kids dash from table to table in search of treasures and gifts to give their family members. A 6th grader proudly displayed all of her items that she found for under $15. She was so proud and told me how she knew her dad would love his new plant! Another kindergartener longingly glanced at a basket for the silent auction. He begged his mom to buy the basket for him. When she explained it was for an auction and not to be purchased like the other items, he did not bend. Instead, he looked at her as only a kindergartener could and said with big eyes, “But mom… this basket is my dream.” Precious! Like most things at Ocean Shore, it was not just the event itself that left an impression upon me. It was the way in which our community was woven together to produce the event from the planning to the cleanup, all under the direction of our beloved Ocean Shore teacher, Patty. The finishing touches at the end of a long day to round up of all the baskets was something quite extraordinary. I witnessed students, staff members like Patricia and Barbara, teachers who had taught a long day, and dedicated parents work like clockwork to clean the MPR, call raffle winners, and reassemble our hallways and MPR in order to welcome students to school today. It was impressive to see how everyone rolled up their sleeves to lend a hand to facilitate this special event that will remain as one of my favorite Ocean Shore traditions. It was awesome to see how alumni and neighbors visited. Ocean Shore’s original secretary even stopped by to shop, along with many other former parents and students to support the Winter Bazaar! The last part of the evening was especially touching. Staff and parents headed across the street to support our teachers Jonathan and Jason who had organized a “Playin’ for Paradise” benefit at the Pedro Point Brewery to support the Camp Fire Relief fund for victims of the recent fires. There was a tremendous turnout! They raised close to $600! This will be combined with our “Find Money” project , in which a local company will match this donation bringing the grand total to close to $1,200! The jars in classrooms will be collected later today, and we will announce to the kids next week about our total amount raised from the “Find Money” project. It is pretty awesome when you think about the power of community when we work together to help others. In one single day, our school hosted the Winter Bazaar to raise money for local families, while at night we gathered to support victims of the recent fire tragedy. It is inspiring as this is an example of how one idea can lead to grand results. I am so supremely proud of the adults who lead our children and the parents at home who set a positive example for our kids. We are fortunate and I am grateful to call Ocean Shore my home. I am our biggest fan! Staff Makin’ Waves: As mentioned above, it was awe-inspiring to see the work and dedication of teachers such as Patty who has helped us prepare for months for the successful Winter Bazaar event. Long hours were spent executing every detail, and bringing others together on the weekend to prepare, and keeping a cheerful smile all the while! Other teachers like Natalie helped organize and prepare for the event. One of our part-time teachers who is a long-time Ocean Shore teacher Alice contributed two full tables of her beautiful knitting to see at the Bazaar! We joked that Alice semi-retired so that she can knit to make items to sell at the Winter Bazaar. What a selfless, generous service Alice contributes to our community! Teachers like Jason and Jonathan set such a positive example for our kids by initiating the music event to raise money for our fire victims! Here are some pictures from the memorable day yesterday! Parents Makin’ Waves:
Last week, our students at lunch had an opportunity to work computer programmers from Google. This event was in recognition of the national “Hour of Code” event which encourages students to be excited about coding. It was a great turnout, and fun to see how our students were creating code! The event would not have occurred without the help of Brett Duncavage and his coordination of the volunteers. Thank you to the Duncavage family for their volunteerism! Weekly Flyers: Dear Ocean Shore Families, Hello! This was a fun week with lots of festivities underway. From our POD day, “Paint Night” fundraiser, PSD facilities planning meeting to preparations for the Winter Bazaar next week, December is a busy and productive month. Our staff lounge has been transformed with anticipation of the Winter Bazaar on Thursday next week. I look forward to seeing you there! Take a look at the details below (a beautiful poster created by our own 2nd grade teacher, Juli!). Reflections From My Office:
As a classroom teacher, I always enjoyed this time of year for the festive celebrations and ways the focus on giving. I especially liked talking with students about what are the “best gifts.” This often led to a discussion about how the best gift aren’t always things…they can be words. My students and I would swap “word gifts” with each other. We shared how they didn’t cost much money, never ran out or went away, and were very easy to wrap! I enjoyed talking about this with our students during lunch this week. At the lunch tables, this provided a great discussion topic: “Word Gifts.” Here were some responses from students when I asked them for examples of “Word Gifts.” My question: What is a word gift you would give to someone? Student responses: · “I would tell my mom that I love her. More than anything!” · “I’ll give a word gift to my best friend. I will tell her I would do anything for her.” · “My friend will always stand up for me. I will tell her that.” · “My mom and dad tell me I’m smart. That always stays with me.” · “My dad believes in me. He tells me that when he drops me off to school in the morning.” · “My grandma told me I’m beautiful.” I encourage you to engage in this conversation with your family! Share with me your responses! Staff Makin’ Waves: We are fortunate to welcome Mika Duff to our faculty this year. As our school psychologist, Mika has jumped into our Ocean Shore family with a splash! She is a wealth of knowledge, works diligently with teachers and parents to support each student need. We are grateful to have her at Ocean Shore this year! From the Front Office: The Winter Bazaar is Coming and We Could Use Your Help! The staff is looking for a few parent volunteers to help on the day of the Winter Bazaar (Thursday, December 13th!). Please visit the poster on the bulletin board in the main hallway to sign up if you can help us out! Important Information for Families Registering a Sibling Into Ocean Shore Next year! We'd like to thank you all for helping to make our Book Fair a success yet again. Despite the smoke lowering the amount of sales, we did well thanks to your support! Thank you to the families that purchased books for the library for all to share and a big "Thank You" to the Darah and Milo Katz family for their most generous donations of many books to our library and to multiple classrooms! Lastly, Thanks to our volunteers for helping us set up, run and breakdown the fair - we couldn't do it without you! Mystery Donation! We recently received a donation of 35 books from our Amazon Wish List! Wow! Unfortunately, there was no paperwork in any of the boxes so our benefactor(s) remains a mystery... Thank you mystery donor! Thank you, thank you! We would love to know your identity so we could thank you personally. As always, we truly appreciate your help in fostering a love of reading and learning in our students.
